Research Group:
Mental Health
Group leader: PD Dr. phil. Jürgen Barth
The Mental Health research group is involved in research projects dealing with the efficacy of psychological and psychotherapeutic interventions. The effects were studies in applied research projects incorporating the development of intervention strategies. Results were used to draw conclusions for mental health service implementation. In addition primary studies were integrated in meta-analysis on clinically relevant topics (e.g. depression, post traumatic stress disorder, borderline personality disorder, somatoform disorder and sexual dysfunction).
In observational studies mental health and individual patient resources are studied as predictors for the course of somatic disorders (e.g. coronary heart disease, pain). Findings from these studies help to identify persons at risk for negative prognosis and give therapeutic hints to enhance good coping for such patients.
The group collaborates on a national level with the Institute of Psychology in Bern (e.g. Section Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy), the Division of Psychosomatic Medicine at the Insel Spital, the Division of Clinical Psychology University Zürich and the Bern Institute for Family Medicine). International collaborations are established with the Division of Clinical Psychologie at the Free University of Amsterdam, the Institute of Psychosocial Medicine and Psychotherapie in Jena, and the Department of Family Practice at the University of Marburg.
A Journal Club is organized by the members of the research group. Recent mental health research is presented and discussed within this seminar (see Blog via psychologyandhealth.wordpress.com ).
The research group welcomes members interested in applied research dealing with mental health issues at any time. Please contact Jürgen Barth via jbarth@ispm.unibe.ch.
